Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight
last night, 2AM interior of my apartment, this song blasting as loud as our speakers can handle. a knock on the door is heard. my roommate opens the door to find a police officer.
Roommate: what seems to be the problem, officer?
Officer: well, I happened to be walking by your door, and heard your music was a bit loud so- wait. is this Phil Collins?
Roommate: why, yes.
Officer: …I love this song.
Me (shouting over the music): want us to turn it down?
Officer: no no, leave this on. this is a really good song.
Turning this funny story into an emotional one:
My dad ALWAYS loved Phil Collins. When my sister and I were younger he would wake us up by running on the treadmill in the basement singing Phil Collins loudly and as out of tune as possible.
This year when my mom, sister, boyfriend, and I got into our car after my dad’s funeral services at the church (before we lead the procession to the cemetery) this song was on the radio, and while we were beyond crushed that we were saying our finally goodbyes to our dad, it was a truly magical moment to know that he was there with us that moment saying goodbye or perhaps singing goodbye in an out of tune voice.
We told everyone getting into their cars to turn on this radio station and all our family and friends did. My boyfriend wanted to turn the volume on the radio down out of respect to the situation, but we couldn’t let him.
Sorry for turning a funny story into a sad one, but this song gets a thumbs up seal of approval by that police officer and me. And oddly enough, I heard this song on my lunch break today.
