It was the second game of the United States Women’s National Team’s post-Olympics victory tour. They called it a Fan Tribute tour – a way to thank their supporters and spread the game around a country that had watched them win Olympic gold in London.  The U.S. was on its way to a 2-1 defeat of Australia at the Home Depot Center in Carson when the camera focused on a waving banner held aloft by a section of fans.  The banner was a large tifo, a rarity at women’s games but this one spanned the section from stairwell to stairwell.  Its caption read “GREATNESS WAS NEVER LOST.”  It was a reference to the shirts the team had donned immediately after their victory over Japan, no doubt a nudge from their corporate sponsor Nike, and it spoke to how these fans felt about their team.

“You are not a product, to be packaged and sold,” they said. “You are our team, and we knew you before the packed stadiums and the gold medal interviews and any corporate claim on your greatness.” Those voices were carried by the Back 4 Patrioteer.

We are MLS supporters. We can’t be told when to sit/stand/sing or wave flags. This is the sport. This is how we roll.

Each respective front office throughout the league loves supporter photo ops but also have to accept that our style of support is a thoughtful and passionate expression that can’t be dictated or orchestrated through policy or instruction. It has to be organic or it is a lie. We support from the heart.

Another weekend spent with my sister and friends at Toyota Park. For once in a long while, it’s actually exciting to go to matches again - the Fire have been playing significantly better than they have the last couple of seasons and have been notching a lot more W’s on the board. 

Also, second place in the Eastern Conference and third place overall. Not baddddd, guys. 

What are your hopes for the end of the MLS season?

The Fire’s founding general manager Peter Wilt, celebrating the club’s 2006 US Open Cup win in Section 8 (a year after he was fired as GM). He was handed the medal by Fire goalkeeper Matt Pickens. It was the Fire’s fourth US Open Cup championship.

A small little clip of my experience at the Fire game in Montreal this past Saturday.

This past weekend I traveled to Montreal to support my @ChicagoFire for their first game of the 2012 season and the first MLS home game of Montreal Impact.  

Before we, Section 8 Chicago, were allowed into the stadium, we waited outside the concrete walls of Stade olympique where chants were sung in excitement for the match. 

I hope to have a more detailed post about my experience at the game posted before the weekend, but until then, enjoy this short video.
